About our company

Kestrel is one of the world’s largest producing underground coking, or metallurgical coal mines and produces around 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually.  Our coal is shipped to key markets in Asia and Europe to be used in the steel making process.  The mine is located in the Bowen Basin, approximately 40km Northeast of Emerald in Central QLD.  Our team’s capability covers the entire mining process, from development to extraction and processing, environmental management and sustainable rehabilitation.  We have an approved life of mine until 2033 and reserves to 2046 with the potential to increase further.

If you're studying Chemical or Process Engineering and want hands-on experience in a real-world plant environment, this is your opportunity to dive into the high-performance world of coal preparation.

During your 12-week paid vacation placement, you’ll be based at our state-of-the-art Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) in Emerald, QLD, working a Monday to Friday or 9-day fortnight roster.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Assisting in process optimisation, troubleshooting, and plant efficiency initiatives
  • Supporting sampling, testing, and data analysis related to coal quality and recovery
  • Participating in daily operational meetings and gaining exposure to real-time decision making
  • Learning how engineering principles are applied to improve throughput, safety, and sustainability
  • Collaborating with the CHPP, maintenance, and technical services teams on site

About you:

We’re looking for curious, committed, and capable students who are ready to learn and contribute. To be successful, you’ll need:

  • To be currently studying a Bachelor of Chemical, Process or related Engineering discipline
  • A genuine interest in coal processing and mining
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Initiative, attention to detail, and a safety-first mindset
  • Competency with Microsoft Office and a willingness to learn site-specific systems
