About our company
Kestrel is one of the world’s largest producing underground coking, or metallurgical coal mines and produces around 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually. Our coal is shipped to key markets in Asia and Europe to be used in the steel making process. The mine is located in the Bowen Basin, approximately 40km Northeast of Emerald in Central QLD. Our team’s capability covers the entire mining process, from development to extraction and processing, environmental management and sustainable rehabilitation. We have an approved life of mine until 2033 and reserves to 2046 with the potential to increase further.

Are you studying Mining Engineering and ready to step out of the classroom and into a real-world, high-performing operation? Our 12-week Vacation Program offers you the chance to learn from some of the best in the industry while contributing to meaningful work that supports the future of mining.
You'll be based at our site near Emerald, working a Monday to Friday or 9-day fortnight roster, and immersed int he day-to-day of an underground coal operation.

What you’ll be doing:
- Supporting mine planning, scheduling, and operational improvement projects
- Working with our technical services team to understand production, ventilation, strata, and design
- Learning how mining engineering plays a key role in achieving safety, efficiency, and sustainability
- Gaining real insight into the underground coal mining environment
- Participating in cross-functional projects and team collaboration
About you:
We’re looking for curious, committed, and capable students who are ready to learn and contribute. To be successful, you’ll need:
- To be currently studying a Bachelor of Mining Engineering
- A genuine interest in mining, engineering, or heavy industries
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Initiative, attention to detail, and a safety-first mindset
- Competency with Microsoft Office and a willingness to learn site-specific systems
