About our company

Kestrel is one of the world’s largest producing underground coking, or metallurgical coal mines and produces around 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually.  Our coal is shipped to key markets in Asia and Europe to be used in the steel making process.  The mine is located in the Bowen Basin, approximately 40km Northeast of Emerald in Central QLD.  Our team’s capability covers the entire mining process, from development to extraction and processing, environmental management and sustainable rehabilitation.  We have an approved life of mine until 2033 and reserves to 2046 with the potential to increase further.

Are you a Mechanical Engineering student eager to apply your learning in a real-world setting? Kestrel’s 12-week Vacation Program is your chance to work on site, side-by-side with experienced professionals, and contribute to projects that matter.

Based at our underground coal mine near Emerald, you’ll work a Monday to Friday or 9-day fortnight roster—experiencing first-hand the pace, challenges, and rewards of engineering in mining.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Assisting with maintenance planning, reliability improvements, and asset management
  • Gaining exposure to surface and underground mechanical systems
  • Supporting the mechanical engineering team and trades across operational projects
  • Contributing to initiatives that enhance safety, performance, and innovation

About you:

We’re looking for curious, committed, and capable students who are ready to learn and contribute. To be successful, you’ll need:

  • To be currently studying a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering
  • A genuine interest in mining, engineering, or heavy industries
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Initiative, attention to detail, and a safety-first mindset
  • Competency with Microsoft Office and a willingness to learn site-specific systems
