Kestrel is one of the world’s largest producing underground coking, or metallurgical coal mines and produces around 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually.  Our coal is shipped to key markets in Asia and Europe to be used in the steel making process.  The mine is located in the Bowen Basin, approximately 40km Northeast of Emerald in Central QLD.  Our team’s capability covers the entire mining process, from development to extraction and processing, environmental management and sustainable rehabilitation.  We have an approved life of mine until 2033 and reserves to 2046 with the potential to increase further.

Are you studying Electrical Engineering and ready to get hands-on with real projects and real people? Our 12-week Vacation Program is your chance to step into the heart of a modern underground mining operation.

You’ll be based at our Emerald site and work a Monday to Friday or 9-day fortnight roster—experiencing firsthand how electrical engineering supports safe, efficient, and innovative mining operations.

What you’ll be doing:

• Working alongside our electrical engineering team on maintenance, design, and project work
• Supporting reliability improvement and automation initiatives
• Gaining experience with surface and underground electrical infrastructure and systems
• Contributing to projects that prioritise safety, innovation, and operational performance

About you:

We’re looking for curious, committed, and capable students who are ready to learn and contribute. To be successful, you’ll need:

• To be currently studying a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering
• A genuine interest in mining, engineering, or heavy industries
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Initiative, attention to detail, and a safety-first mindset
• Competency with Microsoft Office and a willingness to learn site-specific systems
