About our company: 

Kestrel is one of the world’s largest producing underground coking, or metallurgical coal mines and produces around 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually.  Our coal is shipped to key markets in Asia and Europe to be used in the steel making process.  The mine is located in the Bowen Basin, approximately 40km Northeast of Emerald in Central QLD.  Our team’s capability covers the entire mining process, from development to extraction and processing, environmental management and sustainable rehabilitation.  We have an approved life of mine until 2033 and reserves to 2046 with the potential to increase further.

About the role:

We’re excited to offer a unique opportunity for an Underground Electrical Systems Coordinator to join our dynamic Engineering team.  This is a site-based position at Kestrel Mine with the flexibility to work either a Monday to Friday or 9-day fortnight roster.  In this role, you will play a critical role in the design, maintenance, implementation, and optimisation of electrical equipment, systems and facilities that drive our site’s operations.  Your responsibilities will include working closely with operational teams and stakeholders to identify opportunities for engineering product enhancements. You will ensure all electrical systems comply with relevant standards and regulations, oversee and train project team members and technicians, and assist in developing scopes of work for the installation, relocation, and removal of electrical systems.

In this role, you will support Kestrel by: 

  • Design, maintain, and implement electrical equipment, facilities, and systems to support the Life of Mine plan, with an emphasis on continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with operational teams and stakeholders to identify opportunities for enhancing existing electrical infrastructure or initiating new Life of Mine projects.
  • Ensure adherence to installation and operational standards while maintaining compliance with all specifications, regulatory requirements, and operational guidelines.
  • Prepare detailed scopes of work for Life of Mine initiatives, including Real-Time Gas Monitoring and Wi-Fi system installations, relocations, and removals.
  • Estimate costs for materials, labour, and construction to assist in budget preparation and financial planning.
  • Supervise and provide training to project team members and technicians as required, ensuring they are equipped to deliver on project goals and uphold safety and operational standards.

About you: 

Mandatory:

  • Electrical Fitter/Mechanic Competency (Queensland) or a degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Hazardous Area Competency (EEHA).
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the coal mining industry.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills to address operational challenges.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite of software (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Highly Desirable:

  • High Voltage Competency.
  • Underground Electrical Engineering Manager Competencies.
  • Experience with SAP or similar computer-based maintenance systems.
  • Familiarity with operations involving PLC, SCADA, or CITECT systems.
