About our company:
Kestrel is one of the world’s largest producing underground coking, or metallurgical coal mines and produces around 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually. Our coal is shipped to key markets in Asia and Europe to be used in the steel making process. The mine is located in the Bowen Basin, approximately 40km Northeast of Emerald in Central QLD. Our team’s capability covers the entire mining process, from development to extraction and processing, environmental management and sustainable rehabilitation. We have an approved life of mine until 2033 and reserves to 2046 with the potential to increase further.

We're seeking an ambitious and curious Graduate Mining Engineer to join our underground coal mining operation near Emerald, QLD. This is a permanent role within our highly regarded 2-Year Graduate Program, designed to fast-track your development through structured learning, mentoring, and real-world project experience.
Our program is designed to develop our future leaders in mining. You’ll gain valuable insight into planning, production, and innovation in underground mining and be paired with a mentor and supported through formal development opportunities to help build your confidence and capability.
This is a residential role with the option of a Monday to Friday or 9-day fortnight roster.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Collaborating with engineering and operations teams to support daily mining activities.
- Contributing to mine design, scheduling, and planning.
- Assisting in project work to optimise production and improve efficiency.
- Gaining experience in mine ventilation, ground control, and risk management.
- Participating in data collection, analysis, and reporting for key mining metrics.
- Learning from experienced engineers, supervisors, and senior leaders.
About you:
- Recent or soon-to-be graduate in Mining Engineering (Bachelor level).
- A strong interest in mining and desire to learn and grow.
- Practical mindset with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communication and a collaborative team player attitude.
- Commitment to safety, learning, and continuous improvement.
- Strong software skills including Microsoft applications.
- Willingness to live in (or relocate to) Emerald, QLD.
