Kestrel is one of the world’s largest producing underground coking, or metallurgical coal mines and produces around 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually.  Our coal is shipped to key markets in Asia and Europe to be used in the steel making process.  The mine is located in the Bowen Basin, approximately 40km Northeast of Emerald in Central QLD.  Our team’s capability covers the entire mining process, from development to extraction and processing, environmental management and sustainable rehabilitation.  We have an approved life of mine until 2033 and reserves to 2046 with the potential to increase further.

About the role: 

We are looking for an Electrical Engineer to join our Engineering team at Kestrel Mine.  This site-based role will play a vital part in managing, maintaining and optimising the electrical infrastructure that supports our operations.  You will be responsible for project planning, compliance, and providing technical expertise to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of underground electrical systems and fixed plant assets.

In this role, you will support Kestrel by: 

  • Contribute to design, planning and execution of electrical infrastructure projects and activities.
  • Track performance of new infrastructure installations to ensure performance criteria is met.
  • Ensure safe, efficient and cost-effective execution of electrical project work and managing contract compliance.  
  • Lead, coach, and mentor personnel within the Infrastructure Electrical team.
  • Ensure statutory compliance and drive improvements in site operating and engineering standards.
  • Provide technical and electrical support for infrastructure operations and maintenance.
  • Develop and control system documents, standards, and procedures.
  • Offer technical input on overhaul scopes and project management.
  • Provide technical advice and breakdown assistance as needed.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and defect elimination initiatives.
  • Perform electrical inspections, scope preparation, and audits.

About you:

  • Electrical Trade or Tertiary Qualification.
  • Strong knowledge of Installation and Commissioning of Infrastructure electrical equipment.
  • G1, G2, G8 & G9 (Mining Supervisor) accreditation or ability to obtain.
  • EEHA (Electrical Equipment for Hazardous Areas).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyse complex electrical issues.
  • Commitment to business goals, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work collaboratively across teams.
  • High Voltage Switching experience (desirable).
  • Project experience (desirable).
