Kestrel is one of the world’s largest producing underground coking, or metallurgical coal mines and produces around 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually.  Our coal is shipped to key markets in Asia and Europe to be used in the steel making process.  The mine is located in the Bowen Basin, approximately 40km Northeast of Emerald in Central QLD.  Our team’s capability covers the entire mining process, from development to extraction and processing, environmental management and sustainable rehabilitation.  We have an approved life of mine until 2033 and reserves to 2046 with the potential to increase further.

About the role: 
 

An exciting opportunity is currently available for a Shift Undermanager to join the Kestrel team.  In this role you will be responsible for monitoring statutory compliance inline with current mining legislation and the site Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) as well as supervising the mining operations at the mine.  As a person appointed under Section 60 (8) of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act you would be responsible for the control and management of underground activities when the Underground Mine Manager is not in attendance at the mine.

In this role, you will support Kestrel by: 
 

  • Supporting the Underground Mine Manager to control and manage the activities being undertaken at the mine on their appointed shift.
  • Establishing and maintaining statutory compliance to relevant legislation and the Kestrel SHMS across the mine.
  • Assisting in the development of, and ensure the delivery of Kestrel’s shift and weekly operating plans.
  • Providing pro-active safety leadership to ensure teams operate in a manner that ensures a Zero Harm work environment.
  • Demonstrating personal compliance to all elements of the Mine Operating System (MOS) including disciplined planning, delivery, accountability and urgency.
  • Ensuring plans are executed to the highest possible standard.
  • Coaching and mentoring ERZ Controllers / Deputies and other coal mine workers.

About you:
 

  • Hold a current QLD 1st or 2nd Class Certificate of Competency (Undermanager) (or working towards completion), or NSW mutual recognition qualification.
  • Experience in the supervision of large-scale Longwall mining operations.
  • Proven management and leadership capability.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders.
  • A desire to build safe and effective teams with a focus on continuous improvement.
