About the role: 

This 12-week paid vacation placement offers an opportunity to gain practical engineering experience while exploring a potential future career with Kestrel. Working alongside experienced engineers and operational teams, you'll develop practical insights into how technical services and engineering support safe, reliable and efficient underground mining operations.

This opportunity is designed for Mining Engineering students who are looking to apply their university learning in a real-world environment. Throughout your placement, you'll gain exposure to a broad range of Technical Services functions, including mine planning, ventilation and gas drainage, while developing an understanding of underground mining systems, operational processes and the challenges faced by a modern underground coal mine.

Reporting to the Superintendent Ventilation, you will work closely with Technical Services and Operations teams, contributing to meaningful project work while developing practical skills, industry knowledge and professional networks.

In this role, you will support Kestrel by: 

  • Assisting with engineering projects and improvement initiatives across Technical Services and Operations.
  • Gaining practical exposure to mine planning, ventilation and gas drainage activities within an underground coal mining environment.
  • Supporting engineering investigations, data analysis and problem-solving activities.
  • Assisting with the collection, interpretation and reporting of technical and operational data.
  • Developing technical reports, presentations and engineering documentation.
  • Participating in inspections, risk assessments and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Working alongside operational teams to gain a practical understanding of underground mining processes, equipment and production systems.
  • Building an understanding of how Technical Services disciplines support safe, efficient and productive mining outcomes.
  • Contributing ideas and solutions that improve safety, operational performance and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Developing an appreciation of the interaction between engineering, operational and statutory functions within an underground coal mine.

 

About you:

You're a motivated and curious Mining Engineering student who is keen to gain practical industry experience and learn from experienced professionals. You enjoy solving problems, working collaboratively and applying your technical knowledge in real-world situations.

 

You will also have:

  • Currently studying a Bachelor of Mining Engineering and ideally have completed at least your second year of study.
  • A genuine interest in underground mining and the technical disciplines that support mining operations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Sound computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • A commitment to safety and willingness to comply with site requirements, including medical assessments and site inductions.
  • Willingness to be based in Emerald, QLD for the duration of the 12-week vacation placement.
