About the role:
This 12-week paid vacation placement offers an opportunity to gain practical engineering experience while exploring a potential future career with Kestrel. Working alongside experienced engineers, maintainers and operational teams, you'll develop practical insights into how engineering supports safe, reliable and efficient mining operations.
This opportunity is designed for Mechanical Engineering students who are looking to apply their university learning in a real-world environment. Throughout your placement, you'll be exposed to a variety of engineering activities, projects and operational challenges while building an understanding of underground mining systems and equipment.
Reporting to the Superintendent Engineering, you will work closely with our Engineering and Maintenance teams, contributing to meaningful work while developing practical skills, industry knowledge and professional networks.

In this role, you will support Kestrel by:
- Assisting with mechanical engineering projects and improvement initiatives across the operation.
- Supporting mechanical reliability and asset management activities.
- Contributing to engineering investigations, root cause analysis and problem-solving activities.
- Assisting with the monitoring and optimisation of underground mechanical systems and infrastructure.
- Developing technical reports, data analysis and engineering documentation.
- Participating in inspections, risk assessments and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Working alongside maintenance and operational teams to gain practical exposure to mining equipment and processes.
- Building an understanding of how engineering supports safe and efficient production outcomes.
- Contributing ideas and solutions that improve safety, reliability and operational performance.
About you:
You're a motivated and curious Mechanical Engineering student who is keen to gain practical industry experience and learn from experienced professionals. You enjoy solving problems, working collaboratively and applying your technical knowledge in real-world situations.
You will also have:
- Currently studying a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and ideally have completed at least your second year of study.
- A genuine interest in mining, heavy industry, manufacturing or asset-intensive operations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A proactive attitude and willingness to learn.
- The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Sound computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- A commitment to safety and willingness to comply with site requirements, including medical assessments and site inductions.
- Willingness to be based in Emerald, QLD for the duration of the 12-week vacation placement.
